Re: 4-8-4 comparisons by steamfan1945 Sun Jun 15, 2008 2:49 am I don't know the top speeds of the other locomotives mentioned, but the C&O 614 is all roller bearing construction, with a highly balanced drive train. It has a top speed of 120 MPH! Ross Roland damaged the Franklin HIgh Speed Booster during the ACE tests in the 1980's.. Weighing in at 477,000 pounds they could produce over 68,000 pounds of tractive effort and had little trouble hauling passenger trains at speed over the C&O's stiff grades through West Virginia and western Virginia.
