Capped Die The image to the left is an example of a capped die 2001 cent. A capped die is caused by a coin sticking to the striking die during the minting process. When coins are minted, the planchet rests on one die while the other strikes it. When a coin gets stuck to the upper die it continues to strike other coins.. As it continues to strike more coins, the cent that is stuck to the die becomes shaped like a bottle cap, hence the name "Capped Die". Some collectors will refer to these as Bottle Caps or Mushrooms.

The "Capped Die" 1879-CC Dollar earned its name from the crusty die rust that shows up as raised dimples around most of both letters of the mintmark. The Capped Die is also an overmintmark variety, though the rust obscures most of the details.
