Lifeline applies to any damage the source deals, not just combat damage. It changes how we mark damage the source deals to also gain that much life, like how Wither or Infect marks damage to creatures in -1 counters and Toxic N and Infect marks damage to players with poison counters, with Toxic only applying to combat damage.
