"Don't Know Why" was written by Jesse Harris which originally appeared on his 1999 album, Jesse Harris & the Ferdinandos. Jones then covered it for her debut 2002 album Come Away. "Don't Know Why" was recorded in one take in October 2000. Sound engineer Jay Newland thought it was good enough and didn't let Norah Jones and her band to try more takes. Producer Arif Mardin used the take as the original demo and added guitars and vocal harmony to make the song sound as if Jones was harmonizing with herself.
